Day Hikes - What Do I Need When Hiking in New Zealand? |

| All our one day hikes from Christchurch include pretty much everything you will need for a day out hiking in New Zealand's national park, except your footwear. On all New Zealand hikes, we provide wet weather gear, backpacks, walking poles, lunch, afternoon tea & towels. |

What do I need to bring on day hikes?
Most important is a good pair of hiking boots or walking shoes. Lots of people walk in running shoes or trainers and this is fine but if it rains you will get wet feet. Quick dry fabrics (like merino wool or polypropylene) are better than cotton or denim. We do not recommend jeans. A warm jacket, hat & gloves are a good idea if the forecast is for cold weather. We have walking poles, rain-jackets and backpacks to use if you don’t have your own. Sunglasses and a sunhat are a good idea too. The sun is very strong in NZ and it’s easy to get burnt.

What’s for lunch?
We provide a lunch of a tasty salad sandwich (with chicken or ham) on freshly baked bread, a couple of pieces of fruit, a freshly made muffin, a chocolate bar and a small bottle of water. If you have any special dietary requirements please let us know and we will sort it out for you.

What do the day hike tours include?
Christchurch central city accommodation pick up and drop off service, full commentary in private vehicle journey to Arthur’s Pass, free use of our rain jackets, walking poles & backpacks, detailed explanation of flora, fauna, history and geology while walking, lunch (including hot drinks), morning or afternoon tea, visit to Otira viaduct lookout and the Arthurs Pass National Park Visitor Centre. For customers who travel by TranzAlpine, assistance boarding, TranzAlpine information sheet, transfer from Christchurch accommodation to station. |

What will the weather be like?
Arthurs Pass is right on the main divide of the Southern Alps, meaning we can get any kind of weather at any time of year. During our walking season from spring to autumn we can experience sunshine, cloud, rain, wind, extreme heat and extreme cold. It pays to be prepared for anything.
